i-Docs 2018 is a three-day event dedicated to the expanding and evolving field of interactive documentary, hosted by the University of the West of England’s Digital Cultures Research Centre (DCRC). The fifth edition of i-Docs is convened by Judith Aston, Sandra Gaudenzi and Mandy Rose, and produced by Julia Scott-Stevenson. i-Docs 2018 will be held at the Watershed in Bristol’s Harbourside on Wednesday 21st – Friday 23rd March 2018.
While the ‘i’ in i-docs has to date explicitly denoted interactive, we have always been keen to hold the space open for thinking and practice about any work that engages the real and does so using digital media technologies. Innovative forms under consideration within i-Docs include browser based interactive works, locative and place-based non-fiction, augmented and virtual reality works, immersive and data journalism, and other experimental non-fiction narratives. We look forward to presenting a range of papers, panels, case studies and works in progress that engage with these approaches, as well as a project showcase in which delegates can experience a range of completed works.
The symposium aims to encourage critical thinking and making within the field, and to interrogate and share the diverse strategies and practices through which i-docs provide a stage for convening dialogue, creativity and resistance.
At the i-Docs Symposium, project presentations, papers, panels and workshops will sit alongside a showcase of innovative and immersive works.
Our themes for the symposium continue this exploration:
Intervention: Environmental catastrophe looms, yet we retreat into filter bubbles and spread fake news. How might i-docs inclusively navigate this terrain, and envision a hopeful future?
Immersion: As we surround ourselves with stories, we’re also venturing beyond the screen – mixing modes, enhancing and augmenting, and playing with and in the border zones.
Impact: As audiences shift, so too do our ways of identifying and measuring them, and indeed connecting with them. Personalisation, manipulation, and the underlying oceans of data raise complex avenues of enquiry.
Innovation: An exploration of sensory storytelling, artificial intelligence, micro-stories and other adventures with form; all while keeping one eye firmly on evolving traditions of practice.
